SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's swimming and diving team lost at home to the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame 123-118. Utah falls to 0-1 while Notre Dame improves to 2-0 on the year.
Utah faltered in the first event of the night, the 400 medley relay, with both teams being disqualified for early starts. Junior Jonathan Larsen finished first in the 50 free with a time of 21.35 while David Maasberg finished third (21.68). In the 400 IM, senior Cody Rempfer finished with a time of 4:03.73 to take top honors.
At the three-meter diving break, Utah trailed Notre Dame 61-30, but junior Sterling Richards and sophomore Damion Brown finished first and second in the three-meter diving competition with scores of 322.87 and 289.77 respectively to help close the gap.
After the break, Rempfer finished first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.05, while Andrew Brown finished third (1:55.82). Larsen (45.83) and Maasberg (47.80) finished first and third respectively in the 100 free to help close the gap to 55-74 after eight events.
Richards (308.10) and Damion Brown (288.90) finished first and second in the one-meter diving competition to help put Utah in a position to win the meet with only two events left in the meet. In the 200 breast, Evan Castro finished first with a time of 2:07.37, and Utah trailed the Irish 105-119 going into the final relay event.
In the 200 free relay, the team of Andrew Cole, Matan Ratz, Maasberg and Matt Bailey finished first with a time of 1:25.22. Nick Philpot, James Foltz, Kevin Brown and Adam Preston finished third in the event with a time of 1:29.15, but it wasn't enough as the Irish held on for the win 123-118.
