COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Whitney Lopus of the University of Utah swimming & diving team competed in the preliminary round of the 500-yard freestyle during her first day of competition at the NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships on Thursday at the Student & Rec Center.
The freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., recorded a time of 4:53.58 in a preliminary race of the event. The time earned her 62nd place, which unfortunately was unable to earn her a spot in the final round of competition.
Lopus recorded her season-best time in the 500 free at the Mountain West Conference Championships, a 4:42.47 effort that not only earned her a conference title in the race, but also a conference record.
Lopus is scheduled to compete in two more events at the championships later this weekend. She will swim in the second event of tomorrow's schedule, the 100 fly, then will round out her national championships appearance in the 500 free on Saturday, the day's fourth event. The preliminary rounds for both remaining events begin at 11 a.m. CST.
