COLRADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Freshman Josiah Purss set a new school record in the platform dive as the University of Utah diving team completed a successful run at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships at Cadet Natatorium on Saturday.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better competition from the team,” Utah’s Interim Head Swimming & Diving coach Richard Marschner said. “It’s been a privilege to coach them all season and we’re all excited to see Josiah compete at NCAAs in a couple weeks. We have a very bright future ahead of us.”
Day three brought even more accomplishment for Purss as he grabbed a new PR and a Utah school record on the platform (676.80). With his fourth-place finish tonight, Purss was one of only three men to place in the top eight in all three events at the meet.
Sophomore Kersten Merry also recorded a personal best on the platform and grabbed fifth place with 522.45 points. Merry’s performances this weekend earned her the first of two alternate slots for the NCAA Women’s Diving Championships.
Both Purss’ and Merry’s platform placements are the highest-ever in the platform for a Ute at a zone championship meet.
Senior Nelson Foo ended his career tonight with a seventh-place finish on the platform, which stands as his highest-ever career placing at zones.
The NCAA Women’s Championships begin on March 21 and the men's meet will follow, beginning on March 28.
