FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Utah men's swimming and diving team came out with a bang at the Pac-12 Conference Championships in Federal Way, Wash., on Sunday, recording two school records. The Utes stand in sixth with 52 points, while Cal leads the team standings with 74.
"We couldn't have asked for a better start to the men's meet," said Utah interim head coach Richard Marschner. "They are on fire and the next three days are going to be fun to watch."
The Utah men broke the 800 free relay school record for the second consecutive year, beating last year's time by almost 10 seconds and earning a NCAA `B' cut time for sixth place (6:26.06). Sophomore Nick Soedel and freshmen Bence Kira'ly, Jonas Holmstroem and Kristian Kron made up the record-breaking team.
Soedel claimed his own Utah record in the same event, leading off the relay with a 200 free split time of 1:35.80.
"These men are representing our university with passion and pride," said Utah assistant coach James Winchester. "Their performances are a credit to the hard work performed by the whole coaching staff. It's a fantastic start and we are excited for the next three days."
