OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - After the first day of the Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, the women of Utah are tied for second place with BYU at 75 points. The Utah men are currently in sixth-place with 61 points.
Wyoming leads all teams in points on the women's side with 109 points. Competition is tight between all teams with only a four-point difference between second and fifth. In fourth-place, behind Utah and BYU, is UNLV with 74 points and in fifth-place is San Diego State with 71 points.
The Utah women's combination of Beth Gunderson (Portland, Ore.), Lauren Hewson (Estes Park, Colo.), Natalie Edge (South Jordan, Utah) and Hannah Caron (Raleigh, N.C.) finished sixth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.87. The time was the fastest of the season for the Utes, and their first `B' standard time of the season in the 200 medley relay. BYU, the first-place finisher, clocked in a time of 1:41.22, the fastest time in the event for the conference this season.
Anna Braszkiewicz, (Warsaw, Poland) finished in sixth in the 3-meter dive with her score of 285.80, the fifth-highest score of the season in the event.
In the 800 free relay, the women's team of Whitney Lopus (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Annie VanLeeuwen (West Valley City, Utah), Edge and Caron finished in second place with their time of 7:14.29. The time fell short of their season-best of 7:13.62, but still may be a `B' standard time, possibly qualifying them for the NCAA Championships. The first-place team from UNLV broke the MWC record, previously set by the Utes with a time of 7:10.18 in the event.
