SALT LAKE CITY - Four Utah student-athletes were named to the Verizon Academic All-America District VIII At-Large First Team today. Gymnast Theresa Kulikowski, along with skiers Petra Svet and Jernej Bukovec and tennis player Kaisorn Chaichana now advance to the national ballot, which will be released June 10. In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA, must be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season at their current school.
Bukovec, a native of Ljubljana, Slovenia, upheld a 3.64 GPA, while pursuing an undergraduate degree in finance. The three-time All-American recently placed fourth in the giant slalom and ninth in the slalom events to help lead Utah to its 11th NCAA Skiing Championship. Bukovec was awarded the C.D. Reddish Memorial award after continuous contributions on the slopes as well as to the community throughout his tenure at the University of Utah. The senior downhill skier was selected to the 2002 Verizon District VIII All-Academic second team. Bukovec was also honored with the David Novell Outstanding Skiing Award in 2000 and 2001.
Svet maintained a 3.91 GPA in finance and was also honored with the C.D. Reddish Memorial Award after promoting the sport of skiing as a diplomatic ambassador. The native of Ljubligana, Slovenia, finished ninth in the slalom and 12th in the giant slalom events at the 2003 NCAA Championships. The senior managed to win the 2001 NCAA title in the slalom event, while guiding the Utes to a third-place finish. Svet has also received academic All-American honors on top of being honored as the MS Society Collegiate Athlete in '01. The graduate-student was also named the Toril Forland Outstanding Skier Award recipient in '01.
