CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine -- NCAA giant slalom champion Scott Veenis took rank with some of the top competitors in the world, skiing in the GS at the 2006 U.S. alpine championships. The race was held at the Sugarloaf/USA venue.

The first-team All-American held his own against the competition, kicking out of the gate and finishing with a 12th-place mark with a scorching two-run time of 2:12.74. Veenis' downhill performance was good enough to beatout U.S. Ski Team member Tom Rothrock (13th).

"Scotty is continuing to have a great success on the slopes," said head alpine Jaka Korencan. "With a 12th place in the giant slalom at the U.S. national championships, he definitively proved he is one of the most talented young skiers in the nation. It is just great to have such a highly motivated athlete on the team. With his dedication and talent he is raising the level of skiing for the whole team."

The freshman sensation is coming off a first-place gold medal performance in the GS at the NCAA National Championships and is beginning to establish himself as one of the up-and-coming talents on the international racing circuit.

"This is an exciting result," said head coach Eli Brown. "There were not too many non-USST athletes ahead of Scotty. This kid has a bright future and it's pretty exciting to see him progress and knock on the door of the U.S. Ski Team."

Of the top 15 finishes, nine of those results were members of the 2006 U.S. Ski Team. American favorite Bode Miller closed out this year's ski season by winning the event, skiing past Jimmy Cochran and Chip Knighton to complete an all-New England podium.
