PARK CITY - Miles Havlick and Jeremy Elliot both took home victories in their respective races to lead the University of Utah skiing team to a first-place finish after the first day of the NCAA West Region/Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association Championships Friday at the Park City Mountain Resort and the Soldier Hollow Resort.
The Utes totaled 437 points on the day, which stands 2.5 points ahead of second-place Colorado heading into tomorrow's final day of competition.
Utah won the men's giant slalom event with 120 points and was led by Elliot, who claimed the individual crown after crossing the finish line in 2:03.26. This was Elliot's first victory and third podium finish of the season. Nick Cohee turned in a fifth-place run in 2:03.63 then Ryan Wilson was the Utes' final scorer in the event with a ninth-place effort in 2:04.63. Eian Sandvik was 16th in a time of 2:06.19.
Utah registered a pair of podium finishes in the nordic freestyle races at Soldier Hollow.
The Utes totaled 140 points in the men's 10k freestyle race, which was 25 points ahead of runner-up Colorado. Utah was led by Miles Havlick, who won the race with a time of 30:29.3 for his fourth race victory this season. Tom Smith took fourth place with a time of 31:23.6 and Rolf Figi followed immediately in fifth place at 31:34.3 to round out the scoring for Utah. Ian Havlick finished eighth in 32:06.0, while Didrik Smith was 13th at 32:44.5.
In the women's 5k freestyle race, Utah ranked third with 109 points. Maria Graefnings turned in her eighth podium finish in nine races this season after taking third place in the women's 5k freestyle with a time of 17:21.4. Zoe Roy joined Graefnings in the top five with a fifth-place effort at 17:53.6 while Marta Larsen completed Utah's scoring with a 14th-place effort in 18:57.1. Sarah MacCarthy followed closely behind Larsen in 15th place in 19:00.9 then Parker Tyler finished 22nd at 19:21.6. Mali Noyes (19:47.7) and Madeleine Talkington (19:52.8) took 26th and 28th place, respectively.
Sofia Smith posted a team-high eighth-place finish in the women's slalom with a time of 1:30.96. Jaime Dupratt followed in 12th at 1:31.70 and Tii-Maria Romar rounded out Utah's scoring in the race with a time of 2:10.21. Romar was followed immediately by Anna Kocken, who was the 27th-place finisher in 2:24.54.
The 2011 NCAA West Region/RMISA Championships are schedule to conclude tomorrow with the nordic classical races at Soldier Hollow and the women's giant slalom and men's slalom events at Park City Mountain Resort.
