Utes tied for third after first day at CU Invitational

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Utah finished the first day of alpine competition tied for third place with 128 points. Denver University leads all teams with 152 points.

"Today went pretty well," said head alpine coach Jaka Korencan. "It was promising for the rest of the season."

In the men's GS, Kyle Kung paced the Utes with an eighth-place finish. Hermann Lager, a Utah freshman who joined the Utes five days before the competition, impressed with a 13th-place finish.

Eva Huckova led the women's contingent with a sixth-place finish. Mikaela Grassl also skied well, posting an eighth-place finish. Kimberly Stephens placed ninth, while freshman Sofia Smith finished 11th.

The slalom races will be held Sunday night in Steamboat Springs, which has experienced heavy snowfall this weekend.
