Kevin Sweeney is entering the second season of his second stint as Director of Skiing at the University of Utah. He returned to lead the Utah program in September of 2010 and led the Utes to a runner-up finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships.
In addition to its second-place finish at the national meet in 2011, Utah finished second at the NCAA West Regional/ Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association Championships and was awarded the RMISA regular-season title.
Individually, Maria Graefnings and Miles Havlick were named Ski Racing Magazine's 2011 Nordic Collegiate Skiers of the Year. Graefnings was also recognized as the FasterSkier.com 2011 Women's Collegiate Skier of the Year and the RMISA's Female Skier of the Year and the Women's Nordic MVP.
Sweeney continues to build a solid reputation in the ranks of collegiate ski racing and now plans to carry on the Ute ski team's tradition of excellence. As the leader of a program that is so rich in tradition and vying for the NCAA title each year, Sweeney emphasizes excellence in the classroom and on the racecourse.
In seven seasons under Sweeney's direction, the Utes experienced a great deal of national success. In addition to the school's 11th NCAA title in 2003, the Utes captured two NCAA runner-up finishes and two bronze medals while earning 16 NCAA individual championships, 36 All-American honors and four Olympians.
Sweeney is a two-time recipient of Utah's prestigious Don Reddish Award (2003 and 2011), which is presented annually to the coach of a sport other than football, men's and women's basketball and gymnastics, who is deemed to have had the most successful season the previous year. Sweeney also chaired the NCAA Skiing Rules Committee and was also a member of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association's Cross Country Skiing Committee He was also an assistant on the U.S. Ski Team coaching staff at the World Championships in Ramsau, Austria.
Sweeney became an assistant coach with the Utah ski program in 1991, he was given the opportunity to work with one of the most prominent ski programs in the nation. His first stretch as the Director of Skiing ran from 2000-05.
Sweeney remained active in the ski community during his hiatus as the National Director of Competition for Swix Sport USA.
As a competitive skier, Sweeney represented the University of New Hampshire in NCAA competition and represented the U.S. Ski Team in World Cup competition at Mountain Dell, Utah, and Biwabik, Minn. He graduated from UNH cum laude in 1985. An avid outdoorsman, Sweeney immensely enjoys the mountains and desert of Utah.
