SALT LAKE CITY - Liz Abel has been promoted to Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Information at the University of Utah. The announcement was made on Friday by Athletics Director Dr. Chris Hill.
Abel, who began her career in sports publicity at Utah in 1983, was promoted to Associate SID/Director of Sports Publications in 1988 and Sports Information Director in 1991. Abel has been the publicist for the nationally renowned Ute women's gymnastics team since she started at the U. 17 years ago. She has also been the media contact for the Utah football program since 1988 and has traveled with the team to five bowl games.
Abel has earned numerous citations for excellence in publications from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Her gymnastics guide was judged "Best in the Nation" in 1987 and "Second Best in the Nation" in 2000.
In her new appointment, Abel will continue to serve as the publicist for football and women's gymnastics, as well as direct media relations for the entire Utah athletics department and oversee the day-to-day operations of the sports information office. She is one of just 12 female Division I sports information directors in the entire country.
The Bowling Green, Ohio, native received her bachelor's degree from the University of Idaho in 1982 and was honored as the journalism school's top graduate. Abel played women's basketball at the University of Indiana for one year before concluding her career at Idaho, where she was a 1981 CoSIDA Academic All-American.
"This promotion is a reflection of the excellent job that Liz has done over the years for the University of Utah athletics department," said Hill. "She has held a variety of posts during her time here and has become one of the key individuals in our management team. She is one of the few women who have excelled to this level in college athletics media relations, and we are truly proud of what she has accomplished."
